It just hit the web, but already eager horror movie lovers are eagerly seeking the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake trailer. The film comes out at the end of April next year, and with this much hype building seven months in advance, there’s no doubt the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake will be a box office smash.

Directing is Samuel Bayer, whose previous director credits include mostly rock music videos. As is typical of horror films, the cast doesn’t contain  many big-name celebrities, though Freddy is played by Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley.

A viral mystery

So how does a remake of a 25-year-old movie with a practically unknown director create an internet sensation with the trailer? I suppose the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake trailer owes its success mostly to the original movie series.

I don’t know what kind of cash advance in Vermont the filmmakers had to work with to remake “Nightmare on Elm Street,” and I don’t really know why this trailer is getting so much attention, except that perhaps it is modeled after a film that sparked one of the most popular and longest-running horror movie series of all time.  Yeah, that could be it.

Here’s the trailer, but keep in mind that it is a trailer for a horror movie. So here is your disclaimer: horror movie trailer contains horror.

More about ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’

The original “Nightmare on Elm Street” came out in 1984 and starred Robert Englund as Freddy Kreuger. Many horror movie fanatics have opinions about giving the iconic role to a different actor. Robert Englund has played Freddy Kreuger in every “Nightmare on Elm Street” movie, including 2003’s “Freddy vs. Jason.”

Reactions are mixed about Jackie Earle Haley taking over the role. Haley is best known for his roles in “Little Children” and “Watchmen.” Robert Englund had to work pretty hard to break out into other roles and genres after playing Freddy, so perhaps it was his own decision not to portray him again.

Reliving the nightmare

Robert Englund played Freddy Kreuger in the original 1984 “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Freddy Kreuger was the ghost of a murdered murderer who was killed after he was acquitted on a technicality. Kreuger could attack and kill people through their dreams, but one teenage woman managed to pull him out of the dream world and into the real world.

Freddy Kreuger kept coming back for more in “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge,” in which he posesses a human body in order to carry out his killings. The official series continued through “Dream Warriors,” “The Dream Master,” “The Dream Child” and “Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.” Other Freddy Kreuger movies were “New Nightmare” and “Freddy vs. Jason.”
